Autumn
Madison Ely
I savor
the season of autumn, even though it is not my favorite. There are many things
that are delightful about autumn. Commonly known as fall in the United States
this season is actually the period from the Autumn Equinox until the Winter
solstice.
There are many holidays that occur
between September and December. Starting
with Labor Day, in the beginning of September when most places end summer hours
and outdoor entertainment. Traditionally, September is back to school
time. Also in September are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In October there is
Columbus Day, which is a much contested observance. This is because it honors a man who destroyed
a native population. Lastly in October comes Halloween, which is my favorite
Fall Holiday. Halloween is a mash up of various cultural celebrations. It is the day of the dead, the day the veil
is the thinnest, ancestor’s night, and the Celtic New Year Samhain. It has developed into a day to dress up in
costumes and trick or treat. In November, there is Veteran’s Day and
Thanksgiving.
Also
in the autumn is the end of daylight savings time, when you turn your clocks
back one hour. This makes it darker out
earlier. Between the shorter daytime hours and the cooler weather in the
season, it makes it a good time to be inside.
Or at least have a bonfire. The
smell of burning leaves a common one.
Autumn is the time of the year when the birds
begin to fly south for the winter. Other
animals begin to prepare for hibernation.
It is also the time of the harvest, and many delicious fruits and
vegetables are fresh and in season. Like
squash, of which pumpkin is my favorite variety. Apples are also in season, and are being
pressed into yummy apple cider. It is a
good time to find new things to eat and drink.
There are many good reasons to
enjoy the season of autumn. From the
holidays to the harvest, it is a good time of year to share with your family.
It is also a great time to make new friends.
